There’s nothing new with re-releasing games dressed up like a brand new game. Publishers and developers do it all the time and sometimes it seems like they’re doing it for a quick buck or two.
But sometimes these games are really fun.
Here’s 3 games that you should check out if you’re a fan of the original or the type of game.
Yar’s Revenge
Based on Yars’ Revenge on the Atari 2600, this game isn’t as much of a remake as a re-imagining of the brand.
When they announced this I was a little confused. The usual Atari type gameplay doesn’t really work that well today but instead they changed it to a more Sin & Punishment type of game, on rails shooting etc.
This kinda work but I’m not that into the anime-style they’ve applied to it.
But I guess that’s just a matter of taste.
If you like on-rails shooters be sure to check this one out.
NBA Jam
I loved the original NBA Jam games and I played it for many hours on my Mega Drive. I got really excited when EA announced that they were making a new NBA Jam game but after learning that they weren’t going to release it for the 360 or PS3 and only on the Wii I was ready to dismiss the entire thing.
I do not need games that have me throwing a stick around for hours. I’ve been playing with a controller for the last 18 years and I plan on doing so for the rest of my life. Luckily for me, they soon announced that NBA Jam was going to be released as a downloadable game. As a collector I was kinda sad since I like having games on my shelf but at least I got to play the game the way I want to.
In the end it ended up being a retail release. I’m just glad I got it the way I wanted it but is the game any good?
I find it enjoyable. So did many others.
It’s totally a NBA Jam game but in HD. Which may sound dirty and lazy but that’s totally OK. It’s not like I was expecting they to change it at all, I just wanted to play NBA Jam online and that they have provided.
If you’re a fan of the earlier titles, NBA Jam will not let you down.
Goldeneye 007
When they announced this at E3 2010, I kinda shivered.
Knowing that, when I go back to Goldeneye on the N64 the only thing that keeps me from yelling “Fuck this gameplay!” is nostalgia.
And it didn’t make it any better that it was actually going to come out on the Wii. A console without a decent controller for first person shooters.
But somehow, it came out great.
The story isn’t terrible, gameplay feels more modern, it supports the classic controller pro and online.. works.
I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again; If you want a FPS on the Wii, that is as functional as any other console FPS, Goldeneye 007 is the game for you.
This is going to be a series of recommendations of games that is perfect for laptops.
Most of which that is so old that any laptop would be able to run it.
It’s great seeing the go-to games of yesteryear come back to life on a 15″ screen, first one being the one and only:
Diablo 2 Blizzard (2000)
I really have no idea how much time I’ve spent with Diablo 2. Over several years I leveled up everything from Paladins to Barbarians and I could never grow tired of it. The only reason why I’m not playing it still is that everyone else stopped.
But I do jump in a couple of times every year just to keep up with what Diablo is and after trying it on my Macbook I realized that this is the perfect place for it.
Why? First of all, most people played this game in windowed mode. Main reason being that the max resolution is 800×600.
That makes this game perfect for playing while listening to podcasts, music or hanging around in IRC (if anyone still does that. I feel old now..).
Just turn down the music and click until monsters die. Good ol’ fashion fun!
Get in there and hunt down satan! Do it! DEFEAT EVIL!
Note: Newer Mac’s have some trouble with running this game straight out of the box. You’ll need to update to the 1.13.c patch. You’ll find the different patches here
After collecting for many years, it gets harder and harder to keep track of what games you have.
I looked through most of the free options and even though most of them worked great, you do get what you pay for.
Friends of mine then suggested Collectorz.com, a paid service by Amsterdam based Bitz & Pixelz. They had a 30-day trial on what is a $19.80 (¢15.60) per year subscription, so I thought why not?
The service is called “Connect“. With connect you can add all your games to your own virtual “shelf” and sort them anyway you’d like. It has a fairly easy to understand interface and everything is pretty much self-explanatory.
Whenever you’re going to add something to your collection you just search their database, either by name or use a barcode scanner. They sell barcode scanners in their shop as well as subscriptions to their different collection sites.
As of right now they have one for games, music, comics and books.
All which you can have open for the public to see. If you want to that is.
Now, “Connect” in itself is pretty useful. But what makes the sale for me is the different services they have, all which is synchronized with each other.
They have the online part which you can pay monthly, or yearly. The longer you subscribe the more you save.
Then you have the windows program which can sync with “Connect“. And then you got the iOS and Android apps that can sync up with the windows program.
If you want to only get the windows software and sync it with your iphone that works fine but the only thing I didn’t like is that you can’t synchronize ”Connect” and the iphone app. Other then that the entire “Collectorz” catalog is great.
You can test out “Connect” for free for 30 days, I highly recommend you take a look at it.
About 2-3 years ago I started collecting video games.
I all ready had a bunch for the 360 but I barely had any left from my childhood due to borrowing games to people that forgot about it etc.
My main goal with collecting was to get the games that I grew up with back and experience games that I couldn’t afford when I was 10.
The inspiration to this came from surfing youtube actually.
Seeing people getting awesome stuff and having great collections really helped me make up my mind on what to get.
So, today, I felt like making a list of those great youtubers that got me into this collection craze. Some have many subscribers while some deserve many more but all great people that you really should check out.
LukeMorse1
Luke is one of those down to earth guys that might as well be your buddy next door.
Living in Japan, Luke have videos of shopping trips to places most people dream about. Being one of the first people I found on youtube that inspired me to start collecting video games, I’m surprised he doesn’t have more subscribers then he has.
Not only does he have a great “normal” collection of videogames but some awesome arcade action going on too.
With over a thousand videos for you to enjoy, you should check out LukeMorse1.
Croooow
Croooow is, next to Luke, one of those I got inspired to collect video games by watching his videos.
He does a lot of these “Croooow plays” videos as well as collection videos. He got some great content and is a great guy.
One of the more recent additions to my subscription list but a great one.
Holly got a bunch of great videos when it comes to Nintendo stuff. Some awesome Club Nintendo videos too.
Believe me when I say that there are stuff she has shown that I immediately tried to find on eBay.
This dude doesn’t only do video games. He got a bunch of geekery going on. Being one of those people who love everything nerd, this is pretty much the type of channel that I like.
Well informed about everything, really knows what he talks about and comes off as a really nice dude.
So that’s it for now. I’ll probably give some more shoutouts to other youtubers later but that’s it for now.
Check them all out, their all great people.
Before getting my Mac, I’ve only used it while being in school whenever I needed to do editing or design work. After having my Mac for the last 3 months I have discovered a bunch of great software that I probably wouldn’t have tried on a regular PC.
So I thought I’d compile a list over the pretty awesome programs and apps I’ve had the luxury of using these last couple of months.
Now, I’ll get back to this subject from time to time. I always experiment with new programs to help my workflow so I’ll never really run out of material.
So here’s 3 apps that I really enjoy and stay tuned for more.
The program I’m using to write this right now. A great and simple text editor that is distraction-free and Clean (as the name implies).
There is absolutely no fancy stuff going on here, just a solid color background with contrast text color and it’s really easy on the eyes. I recommend this highly for everyone that likes to write.
Throughout the years I’ve used a bunch of different FTP clients. I tried most of the free ones that are for Windows but I had some troubles finding one for Mac OS X.Filezilla is the one I ended up on. It’s totally free and easy to use. Not much to say about this one but if you want to work with web stuff, this is the FTP client for you.
A small little app (0.3 MB) that does one simple little thing; Prevent your Mac from going to sleep and displaying the screen saver. You could do this in the system preferences but that takes time and you’re bound to forget that you’ve done it and burn your batteries down when you wouldn’t need to.
This little app lives in the menu bar where with only one click you can activate or deactivate it in milliseconds.
The perfect app if you need your mac to stay on while downloading or uploading something.
Apple should buy this off the developers and put it in OS X for free.
but can it live up to the 14 years of expectations?
Well, it’s kinda hard to judge.
The gameplay kinda feels old, graphic wise it looks sharp enough and the humor is kinda funny.. In that so bad that it’s good kinda way.
So if you’re looking for a game filled with geek humor and don’t mind having more of a Serious Sam feel rather than Black Ops, you should try this game out. It’s not horrible.
Then again, we who pre-ordered this game didn’t do it because we thought it was going to be the greatest game ever. We just wanted a piece of history.
I only wish the collectors edition came with a DVD filled with footage of Broussard and friends trying to keep 3d Realms floating and make this game. If it was released while still using the Quake engine it might have been a hit.
Hopefully, people wont judge this one too harshly.
Yesterday Nintendo announced their new console, the Wii U. My first impression was that we have officially hit the top of the “Shitty name”-berg and I wonder how much money someone got for coming up with it.
I feel like every Nintendo console has had an appropriate name. Starting with the Nintendo Entertainment System and ending with the Gamecube. They have always explained what the console is, while not being too serious.
Anyway, after reading up on it (since their E3 show didn’t really explain anything and only made people more and more confused) I’m really looking forward to the Wii U. Not a whole lot has been revealed about the system itself except for the fact that it will be outputting 1080p but I do see potential in it.
Just thinking about a game like Super Mario Galaxy 2 in full HD is tickling my gamer-bone.
But what do we know about the new console? - We know it’s going to output 1080p
- It’s going to use 25GB proprietary discs, which is the same size as a single layer blu-ray
- Backwards compatibility with Wii games but in the same resolution as the Wii
- It will not support Gamecube games
I’m glad they finally got around to getting HD into the mix. I don’t really care if it’s more powerful than the 360 or PS3, because I know Nintendo can deliver games that takes less hardware but looks amazing. If you pair that with a crisp HD resolution you get gold.
I’m sure I’m not the only one who has checked out those 1080p videos of the Dolphin Emulator on youtube.
But not upscaling Wii games is a bummer. I know that the games can handle it, especially games like Super Mario Galaxy and Mario Kart, and they would look awesome in HD.
I still haven’t heard any reason why this is but I’m going to look through all the interviews for answers.
But what Nintendo was really focusing on was the controller.
This is what got really confusing for many people as it almost seemed like the controller was the new system, that magically made the Wii HD etc.
The fact that I had to look up what this system even was says something about Nintendo’s show.
My first thoughts about the controller was that it looks impossible to handle. Knowing that people had trouble with the original Xbox controller, which is dwarfed in comparison to the this, is kinda worrying me about the reception from the general public. I have heard reports that the controller actually feels good but I guess I have to wait for the system to come out to be sure.
The controller will have all the buttons you need for a regular controller but with a 6.2-inch touch screen and a front facing camera. It also got a headphone jack and the motion technology from the Wii remote.
I’m not really sure if I love the idea of the thumb-”discs” but for all I know they might feel great.
What did I think overall? It kinda looks fun. If they can open their console library to 360 and PS3 style games while holding on to the “fun” games they’ve had for the Wii it can be a potent machine.
I do worry that this will be Nintendo’s Dreamcast, being the middle guy between console generations, and when the new Xbox or the PS4 comes out they’ll be dead in the water. I hope they have that in mind as they get ready to ship the Wii U.
I am excited about seeing Nintendo doing thing I like for a change and I know I’m going to get this on launch day.
When I think indie games I usually think of games like Braid, developed by one dude drawing a lot of inspiration from classics like Super Mario bros. but with a “twist”.
The thinking mans game.. or something.
What I don’t think about is a multiplayer mech fps.
Hawken is that but with visuals like the big money spenders games. And it currently has 9 people working on it.
Let’s put it like this; I tip my hat to them.
The game looks really stunning and I really hope it plays as great as it looks.
If it does it might just be my next go-to online multiplayer game. I predict a whole lot of money coming to these gentlemen.
